Life Balance Cornwall: The Three Pots That Keep You Centred

By Pete Cann – Empowerment Coach, Cornwall

Ever Feel Like You’re Running on Empty?

If you’re struggling with life balance in Cornwall, you’re not alone. Imagine this: you’re in a cosy kitchen with three steaming pots—each one representing a part of your life…

Picture this: You’re standing in a rustic Cornish kitchen, three steaming pots on the stove. One is bubbling wildly. One’s simmering gently. And one’s barely warm. This, my friend, is your life.

We all carry three metaphorical pots: Personal, Family, and Work. And just like any good cook, we need to keep an eye on each one. Because when one pot starts boiling over—or worse, dries out completely—it throws the whole recipe of your life off balance.

Let’s break it down.

The Mind Chatter Before the Burn

1. The Personal Pot
This is your pot. The “You Pot.” Mine’s the Pete Pot. It’s where your energy, self-care, joy, and growth simmer.

2. The Family Pot
This one bubbles with your relationships—partners, kids, parents, friends. It’s your emotional connection space.

3. The Work Pot
Your career, your business, your finances. This pot often gets the most heat, doesn’t it?

Now here’s the thing. You’ve only got 100% total energy to pour across these three. That’s 100 millilitres. 100 minutes. 100 beans. However you want to visualise it, you can’t pour more than you’ve got.

So how are you splitting yours?

Why the Personal Pot Often Gets Left on the Back Burner

In my coaching sessions—especially here in Cornwall—I hear the same thing:

“I give so much to work. I give what’s left to my family. There’s nothing left for me.”

Sound familiar?

When your Personal Pot is low, everything else suffers. You snap more. You sleep less. Your creativity tanks. And you show up as half yourself in the spaces that matter most.

But here’s the kicker: You’re allowed to fill your pot first. In fact, it’s essential.

Finding Life Balance in Cornwall: A Coaching Approach

When I begin working with someone, we start here.

I ask:

  • On a scale of 0–100%, how full is each pot?

  • What’s bubbling over? What’s running dry?

We get honest. We get visual. Sometimes we even draw mugs!

Then, we look at the one pot that’s thirstiest—and we create space to fill it. Even if it’s just 30 minutes a day.

Because small top-ups? They add up.

Why Life Balance in Cornwall Can Feel So Tricky

Here in Cornwall, life flows differently. The sea rolls in and out. The pace shifts with the tides and the tourist seasons. And yet, the pressure to “have it all balanced” still looms.

That’s why this analogy works so well.

It gives you permission to reset gently, without chasing perfection. It helps you live with intention—whether you’re running a business in Truro, parenting in Penzance, or navigating change in Newquay.

Ask Yourself:

  • Which of my pots feels lowest right now?

  • What’s one tiny act that could refill it—today?

  • If I topped up my personal pot, how would I show up differently?

This Week’s Action Point:

👉 Grab three mugs. Label them: Me, Family, Work. Pour water into each one to represent how much energy you’re giving each.

Now take a step back. What needs more? What needs less? What needs you?

📅 Choose one 30-minute window this week to refill the pot that’s running dry.

Say it out loud. Breathe. Begin again.
